The #OBSCENE Gender Pay Gap in Porn

Did you know that porn is the only industry where men are paid less than women for their work?

😢

Well actually, on average they are paid 30% less than women for doing the same job. Surprised? The real stars of mainstream porn are generally women. We don’t view men in porn as quite the heroes they may appear to be. Actually, a lot of the time they’re just headless bodies. These days we see more and more POV (point of view) shots in mainstream porn, so we barely see the male actor at all. Most of the time, they’re degraded to the point of just being there to provide a penis! People pay a lot of money to see their favourite female performers again and again, but unfortunately for men that’s not always the case. Maybe that’s why so many incredible male performers like Owen Gray and Mickey Mod prefer to work for ethical porn producers.

As an ethical adult film maker myself, I pay my performers equally! They have the same amount of rights and the same amount of value regardless of gender! It’s important that everyone in the porn industry is treated equally and by helping me spread the word, we’re getting there bit by bit. We need to fight for equal rights for women and men. But excuse me if I’m not losing sleep over men’s wages just yet… After all, this is one of the only industries where men are paid less.

And that sentiment isn’t lost on non-profit organisation IBWOMEN, who have used this piece of news to highlight the obscene global gender pay gap. Their use of humour and satire in a new campaign called #OBSCENEGAP perfectly displays how a group of men complaining about earning lower wages than women, is pretty hard to take seriously. The campaign by Madrid based advertisers is designed to make you say “qué?” and further drive home the real injustices faced by women all over the world. Check out the #OBSCENEGAP video below!

The campaign also highlighted another issue for me. Why is it that women can only earn more than men by shooting porn? Monica Moro, CCO of the advertising company who created the ad said “Do all women have to become porn actresses to earn as much, or more than men?” and it’s a super good point! Not only is this an opportunity to address the gender pay gap, it’s also time to address how we perceive the jobs that women are fit to do! Why is it that a woman is considered a more valuable porn performer but not more valuable in other roles? Why is it that Hollywood actresses and female directors still don’t get paid the same as men for the same work? It’s important to note that women aren’t just valuable for being women; they’re more valuable when they’re young, nubile, shaved and submissive!

At least we can be hopeful that with more campaigns like #OBSCENEGAP, we can start to take notice of these issues on a larger scale!
