The Lust Guide to a Healthy and Happy Vagina All Summer Long

Erika Lust | August 25, 2020 | 3 min. read

Warm weather, beaches, swimming pools, hot tubs, bike rides… Summers are fun but they are also prime time for irritation of the vulva and vagina. So whether it’s a yeast infection, ingrown hairs or just general irritation these vulva care tips will help you keep everything happy all summer (and year) long.

Change Your Undies

First things first, you may need to change your underwear more often than usual. High temperatures mean that you may experience extra sweat down there which can subsequently increase your risk of thrush and irritation.

Try to opt for cotton underwear if possible and save the sexy lace numbers for another time. Cotton is a breathable fabric and allows free airflow that will keep you dry.

Also, if you’re having some sweaty summer workouts, be sure to change as soon as possible when you finish.

Take The Bikini Bottoms Off

Yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis love a warm, humid environment so sitting in your wet swimsuit isn’t a recipe for a healthy vag.

Take a dip and then get changed into some dry bottoms.

Or, better yet… go skinny dipping. ?

Loose Comfortable Clothing

Wearing tight clothes for long periods of time isn’t good for your vagina as it completely restricts air flow. The heat and sweat that gets trapped in there makes a breeding ground for bacterial growth.

So, wear loose fitting clothes and skip the underwear while you sleep to give your delicate parts some time to breathe.

Ingrown Hairs & Infections

If you’re into removing your pubes, you may be prone to ingrown hairs which can cause painful red bumps or even infections.

For starters, be sure to exfoliate the area. Also, examine your hair removal method – are you using an old, blunt razor?

Aloe vera can also be helpful to apply post-shave to help soothe and prevent irritation (just make sure to keep it from entering the vagina). And, remember that there isn’t any shame with showing some hair or some bumps.

Also, try to shave the day before you plan on heading to the beach or your local pool and you’ll decrease your risk of vaginal irritation or infected pores. Open pores may not be ready for unfriendly skin environments such as sun, chlorine, and salt water.

Into The Wild

If you’re going hiking or camping this summer, you may have limited access to bathrooms and not be able to clean up like you normally would.

Pack some toilet paper or vaginal hygiene wipes to help you stay clean and dry when possible (but also remember to put them in a bag and take them to a bin when you can – leave no trace!).
