Who Is Jahel?

Jahel ("the h is silent"), she explains, is a Venezuelan documentary and art photographer based in Barcelona, driven by a deep fascination with people and the stories written on their bodies, faces, and gestures. Her work begins with connection. She observes closely, listens carefully, and creates portraits of those who make her heart beat faster, images shaped as much by intimacy as by intention. Her photographic practice is rooted in an ongoing exploration of identity, particularly through the lens of the Latin American diaspora. Jahel approaches image-making as a political and emotional act, questioning who looks, who is seen, and how power moves through the camera. Committed to decolonising visual narratives, she understands photography not as a neutral tool, but as something charged, capable of reinforcing structures or dismantling them. As a feminist artist, Jahel is actively engaged in collective actions and mixed-arts practices. The place she occupies within her community directly informs the stories she chooses to tell and the way she tells them. Her work often centers female identity, tenderness, resistance, and belonging, with projects developed both in Europe and in territories now known as Latin America. One of her main ongoing projects is currently being developed in Mexico, where long-term relationships and trust shape the portraits she creates. Alongside her personal work, Jahel also works on film sets, shooting still images that capture the invisible moments between takes: the glances, pauses, and energies that don’t always make it to the screen. In recent years, she has collaborated closely with Erika Lust, contributing not only as a stills photographer but also as a creative producer, bringing her visual sensitivity and political awareness into feminist erotic cinema.
