Il greco antico non è proprio il mio forte.

Alla fine dei corsi la professoressa fa un annuncio alla classe.

«Ho deciso di proporvi un gioco. Scriverò una parola: vi sfido a trovarne il significato. Alzerò il voto al primo di voi che ci riuscirà»

Il termine alla lavagna è σκοτοβινιαω. Un'occasione imperdibile per evitare la bocciatura.Sfoglio il vocabolario in autobus. Niente da fare, la parola magica non c'è. A casa accendo il computer e cerco sul web: ancora niente.

Ho quasi rinunciato quando mi viene un'idea: il vecchio dizionario della bisnonna! Recupero il tomo polveroso dalla libreria e… bingo! σκοτοβινιαω: morire dalla voglia di scopare. Non ci posso credere.

Apro la posta elettronica e scrivo:

“Buonasera Professoressa,

ho la risposta: σκοτοβινιαω = morire dalla voglia di scopare.

Spero di essere stato abbastanza veloce.”

Clicco su invia e mi domando se ho fatto una stupidaggine.

La risposta arriva la mattina seguente. A quanto pare sono il vincitore; la prof mi invita addirittura a partecipare al seminario di cultura greca che ha organizzato.

Quando arrivo in Via del Simposio è tardo pomeriggio, il sole si abbassa verso l'orizzonte. Lei esce ad aprirmi: indossa un peplo e sandali di cuoio. La seguo sul retro della villa, nel giardino circondato da siepi; alcune colonne ioniche decorano l'ambiente. Mi siedo su una poltrona di legno.

«Allora, ti sei guadagnato la sufficienza. Ma dimmi la verità, che ne pensi della parola segreta?»

«Beh, mi ha fatto sorridere un verbo con quel significato»

«Capisco. Ma ora ti spiego: ti ho invitato qui proprio per approfondire il senso di questa bizzarra parola»

«Che… che cosa intende?»

«Voglio dire che passerò l'intera notte a stuzzicarti, ma tu non potrai toccarmi. Se riuscirai a resistere fino all'alba, allora avrai capito cosa intendevano gli antichi saggi e ti darò la tua ricompensa. Siamo d'accordo?»

Lascia cadere il peplo rivelando il corpo completamente nudo, è dà inizio a una nottata indimenticabile.

Ancient Greek isn’t really my forte.

It's the end of the course, and the professor makes an announcement to the class.

«Let's play a game. I will write a word: I challenge you to find its meaning. The first to succeed will have a raise in his final grade»

The term on the blackboard is σκοτοβινιαω. For me, this is an opportunity to avoid getting flunked.

I start checking my dictionary on the bus. Nope, magic word is not there. At home I turn my computer on and search on the web: damn, still nothing.

I almost give up when I have an idea: old great-grandma’s dictionary! I pick the dusty book off the bookshelf and… bingo! σκοτοβινιαω: dying to fuck somebody. I can’t believe it.

I open my mailbox and write:

"Dear teacher,

I have the answer: σκοτοβινιαω = dying to fuck somebody.

Hope I was fast enough.”

I click on send and hope I didn't do anything stupid.

The answer comes the next morning: apparently I'm the winner; the professor even invites me to take part in the Greek culture seminar she’s organized.

When I get to Symposium Street it is late in the afternoon, the sun slowly coming down towards the horizon line. Teacher comes out to open the gate: she’s wearing a πέπλος and leather sandals. I follow her to the back of the villa, in a garden surrounded by hedges; some ionic columns decorate the setting. I sit down on a wooden armchair.

«So, you've earned your grade. But tell me the truth, what do you think of the secret word?»

«Well, it made me smile, you know… a verb with that meaning»

«I get it. But let me tell you: I invited you here to make sure you fully understand the sense of this bizarre word»

«What ... what do you mean?»

«I mean I'll spend the whole night teasing you, but you won't touch me. If you manage to keep yourself until dawn, then you’ll have clear in mind what the wise ancients meant, and I'll give you your true reward. Are we clear?»

The πέπλος falls down revealing her body, completely naked, and an unforgettable night is set to begin.
