Who is Popo fan?
Popo Fan says he chose film school because he was bad at math. That small, almost accidental decision got him to the Beijing Film Academy and he ended up shaping one of the most distinctive queer voices in Chinese contemporary cinema. He was born in China in 1985 but moved to Berlin after graduation. Now Popo Fan is a well-known queer porn filmmaker, writer, and gay activist that moves between documentary, experimental film, and yes, porn. But what makes his trajectory interesting isn’t just what he creates, it’s how he got there. During his early university years, he wasn’t even sure he belonged to film universe. Surrounded by classmates obsessed with cinema theory, he felt out of place until something unexpected happened. He shared a TV with a deeply homophobic classmate, and the two began watching queer films together. Over time, that same classmate completely changed his perspective. As Popo puts it: “Film won’t change your sexual orientation, but it will give you a wider view of the world.” That moment became a turning point, not just creatively, but politically. From there, Popo immersed himself in LGBTQ+ storytelling, eventually directing influential documentaries like Mama Rainbow. His activism, of course, also came with friction. Although legal persecution was repealed in 1997, discrimination against LGBT people is fierce. Chinese culture esteems filial responsibility for raising offspring and continuing one's family line; not doing so is considered by many a social transgression. Government censorship, banned content, and constant pushback shaped Popo's understanding that art and politics are inseparable. His move into adult cinema, working on ERIKALUST feels less like a shift and more like an expansion. For Popo Fan, porn is not separate from his activism, but a continuation of it: a space where trans bodies, desire, and narratives can exist freely, without apology. Between borrowed money from his boyfriend, crowdfunding, and even joking about a “sugar daddy in Beijing” helping with rent, his career has never followed a conventional path. But that’s exactly why it works. We admire him.

In Hot Pot 3 Way, Popo Fan takes something as ordinary as dinner and turns it into a slow-burning exploration of curiosity and desire. The story follows Zoe (Luna Silver) and her boyfriend Jonas as they try a Chinese hot pot experience for the first time. As boundaries blur, the presence of a third person transforms the moment into a charged bisexual threesome porn film where tension, humor, and attraction unfold naturally. Popo’s direction focuses on atmosphere and progression, letting the scene evolve to amazing anal play scenes and group sex dynamics woven into the erotic narrative. With Hey, Siro, Popo Fan moves into a completely different universe. Set in a neon-lit world where technology becomes sentient, this sex film imagines what happens when AI is no longer just responsive… but curious. Inspired by the idea that desire is a fundamental human need, the story plays with the concept of tech experiencing intimacy, blurring the line between user and device. Featuring Romeo and Lucy Huxley, the film mixes humor, imagination, and erotic tension into a visually striking short that rethinks how we relate to technology. As Erika Lust described it, “Spike Jonze’s Her just got erotic.” The result is a bold, playful take on heterosexual intimacy, oral pleasure and sensory exploration, wrapped in a futuristic fantasy that lingers long after the screen fades.
