When baker’s daughter Heidi takes over the family business, things are not going well. To Heidi’s shame, she has not inherited the natural talent for baking typical in her family.
Just when Heidi is about to give up, she meets Leopold, an English deaf-mute soldier begging for spare change outside the bakery. Taken by his mysterious charm, Heidi falls deep, deeply in love with him and takes him in to her home.
A year later, Heidi and Leopold hire Belgrad a mad musician with the tendency to get in trouble for his arrogance. Almost like someone waved a magic wand – business starts to look better, the bread starts to sell like hot cake and rumours are starting to spread throughout the town..what’s going on in the once so inconspicuous little bakery? What the hungry villagers don’t know is that every night behind closed doors, the magic trio adds an irresistible, secret ingredient to the dough…
Who would have thought that a beautiful, semi-talented baker, a deaf-mute soldier and an unemployed musician would shake up the world of an entire village?
I didn’t think of it when I was shooting Heidi & The Dough Boys, but now it reminds me a bit of the academy award winning comedy-drama ‘Chocolat‘ by director Lasse Hallström, where a free spirited woman and her chocolate magically influence the lives of the townspeople around her.
I have always loved combining food with pleasure in my movies, so I guess you can consider Heidi & Dough Boys an Erika Lust Classic ?
Flour, yeast, water, salt, his strong hands kneading the mixture in a sensual way, and me, looking at him with big eyes behind the glass of the bakery in my neighbourhood.
I was only a teenager and the baker was a little older than me, and even though nothing ever happened, in my fantasy I was his dough, and we made love on top of the table covered in flour, the air full of sweet aromas. The spices, the smell of recently baked bread, the intense heat of the oven, the fire wood… the whole atmosphere still makes me shiver when I enter an authentic bakery or when I cut the first piece of a really good loaf.
