Some firsts matter more than others.
The Saree Shop is XConfessions' first South Asian themed film, a colourful, sensual celebration of South Asian sexuality, representation, and the particular beauty of the saree. Co-directed by Erika Lust and Kali Sudhra in their first creative collaboration, and starring Kali alongside new performer Kajal.
Inspired by a real confession about a handsome shop attendant, this is a trans love song to the saree and to South Asian bodies and desire, told through vibrant fabrics, intimate touch, and the quietly electric process of trying on something beautiful.
We've received a lot of confessions recently from people in India and I really wanted to direct a movie based on the fantasies. It was an amazing experience making this and I learnt a lot about the saree and South Asian traditions from Kali and Kajal, which I'm forever grateful for.
